Background: South African police arrested at least two mourners during the funeral of former African National Council (ANC) member, Lawrence Molora Modikwane, in Soweto on June 12. Mr. Modikwane died in the first week of June. He was imprisoned for five years on Robben Island in 1963 after being charged with recruiting people to the ANC. Five hundred people attended the funeral, which was held four days after the sixth anniversary of the Soweto uprising. Speakers of various community and student organisations addressed the mourners, including a spokesman for the Conference of South African Students. Urged on by chants of 'Forward Africa', he promised that South African blacks would answer injustice with injustice and a bullet with a bullet. He addressed Mr. Modikwane's life as an inspiration for everyone to carry on the struggle against the South African system of apartheid. The mourners then moved to Avalon cemetery in Soweto for the burial. But police intercepted the marchers, saying they were looking for certain people, and arrested at least two of the mourners, one of whom is seen here. The mourners continued with the burial.
