Fifteen miles south of the capital of Phnom Penh in the Khmer Republic, communist forces were counter-attacked by government troops. The fighting took place on Thursday (3 May) on and around Highway 30. The communists took the area about 3 weeks ago and built up a big concentration of troops. However, they have been apparently reluctant to press home their sudden advance with an all-out attack on the capital.
The government counter-attack south of the capital was mainly led by the Khmer Krom 7th Division. Their main objective was a bunker area in heavy foliage. They got to within 20 metres of it before the communist opened fire. The high rate of fire, concentrate don the narrow 100 metre front, was deafening. The communist attempted to knock out the advancing government armoured personnel carriers. Many rockets landed only feet away from the targets, but only two of the carriers were hit. These were not badly damaged. Following the rocket attack the APC's backed off.
Although the Khmer forces had come near to gaining their objective at the cost of many casualties, the communist forces were still entrenched din their positions at the end of the day. All that the government forces had gained was about 150 metres of territory.
