  • Description

A military review in Karlovy Vary on Tuesday (18 August) marked the end of a week of joint Soviet-Czechoslovak exercises aimed at improving their combat coordination and strengthening their friendship. Troops and air units participated in the review, which was reviewed by Czech leaders and commanders from the Warsaw Pack forces.

Both Soviet and Czechoslovak troops participated in the review, which featured an address by Czechoslovak President Ludvik Svoboda.

Armoured personnel carriers then drove past the reviewing stand to be followed by tanks, rocket launchers, and trucks drawing artillery pieces.

Helicopters and Mig-21 jet fighters flew overhead. Mobile launchers with tactical missiles also passed the officials on the stand.

A Ceteka News Agency report said both Czechoslovak and Soviet armies had performed well in the joint exercises under difficult conditions. The exercises involved tank units, armoured personnel carriers, rocket launchers and close ground support by jet aircraft. Their location and the number of men involved were not disclosed.

The Soviet forces were among the units stationed in Czechoslovakia under a treaty signed two months after the 1968 military intervention by Warsaw Pact troops.
