  • Description

Six hundred footballs have been especially made by the Adidas company at Haguenau in France for the World Cup Football Finals, which open in West Germany on June 13.

As is fitting for this spectacular competition between the world's supreme footballing nations, the balls are being made with the utmost skill and care so that they won't change shape or weight whatever the conditions.

The balls are made of especially selected and conditioned oxhide and are given several treatments with paint -- either black, white or orange. Each ball consists of 32 leather panels. These are stitched together on the inside by Spanish craftsmen especially skilled in this art. Then the seams are waterproofed.

Finally, the balls are tested to see that they have a circumference of between 27 and 28 inches (607 and 712 mms) and a weight of between 14 and 16 ounces (392 and 448 grms). They are then delivered to the International Federation of Football Associations (FIFA).

SYNOPSIS: The pieces are sewn together with nylong thread by Spanish craftsmen who are especially skilled in this exacting art. The fact that this work is done by hand rather than by machine ensures the highest quality.

The World Cup is the supreme footballing competition in which sixteen nations will pit their skills against each other.

In the later stages of the ball's construction the leather panels are turned outside in.

Then a bladder is inserted, and the ball is sewn up. Finally the seams are waterproofed and the whole ball is provided with an additional coat of waterproof paint.

Then the ball is ready to be despatched to West Germany.

It is now almost certain that each ball will maintain a circumference of between twenty seven and twenty eight inches and a weight of between fourteen and sixteen ounces, no matter how sodden the turf on which it bounces, no matter, how vicious the spin imparted by a cunning Uruguayan instep, no matter how much power there is behind a cleanly swung German boot.
