  • Description

UNITED STATES AND NORTH VIETNAMESE NEGOTIATORS HAVE AGREED TO HOLD WEEKLY MEETING EACH WEDNESDAY IN THEIR SEARCH FOR A BASIS FOR PEACE IN VIETNAM. THE DECISION WAS MADE AT THE NINTH FULL-SCALE SESSION IN THE PRELIMINARY PEACE TALKS HELD IN PARIS TODAY (WEDNESDAY).

FIRST ARRIVAL FOR TODAY'S SESSION AT THE HOTEL MAJESTIC WAS THE CHIEF U.S. NEGOTIATOR, AVERELL HARRIMAN. HE WAS FOLLOWED A FEW MOMENTS LATER BY THE LEADER OF THE NORTH VIETNAMESE DELEGATION, XUAN THUY, ACCOMPANIED BY HIS ADVISOR, LE DUC THO, WHO WAS ATTENDING THE TALKS FOR THE SECOND TIME.

WHEN THE MEETING GOT UNDERWAY XUAN THUY ACCUSED THE UNITED STATES OF INTENSIFYING THE WAR IN NORTH AND SOUTH VIETNAM. HE AGAIN REJECTED U.S. DEMANDS FOR RECIPROCAL RESTRAINT AND CALLED FOR IMMEDIATE CESSATION OF U.S. BOMBING RAIDS AGAINST THE NORTH.

EARLIER, MR. HARRIMAN TOLD REPORTERS THAT THE UNITED STATES WANTED TO RE-ESTABLISH PEACE ON THE BASIS OF THE 1954 GENEVA AGREEMENTS WHICH ENDED THE SEVEN-YEAR WAR IN THE THEN FRENCH INDO-CHINA STATES OF VIETNAM, LAOS AND CAMBODIA.

UNDER THE 1954 AGREEMENTS VIETNAM WAS TEMPORARILY DIVIDED ON THE 17TH PARALLEL PENDING REUNIFICATION THROUGH FREE ELECTIONS.
