SYNOPSIS: In a moving ceremony last Friday, the 18th of June, Congo-Brazzaville paid hommage to the memory of General de Gaulle. The 18th of June is a date closely linked with France....it was a day in 1940 when France was reeling under the onslaught of the armies of Nazi Germany, and all seemed lost. Paris had fallen. From London came a call from General de Gaulle..."France has lost a battle, but we have not lost the war". The rest is history.

Representing France at the ceremony was their Ambassador, M.Marc Bonnefous. With him is the Chief-of-staff of Congo-Brazzaville, M. Joachim Yombhi.

Brazzaville has a special affinity with General de Gaulle's war. It was from the Congo that the General announced, on October 27 1940, that he had named himself the leader of a Council of Defence of the Empire, a War Government of France.

The French Ambassador and the Chief of Staff of Brazzaville laid the wreaths.

    M. Bonnefous later said to M. Yombhi that occasions such as this brought their two countries closer together history always unites.
