  • Description

In an effort to find ways to forestall or minimise further bomb attacks on public buildings by terrorist groups, Japanese police test-fired homemade bombs at a military range in Gumma Prefecture near Tokyo on Friday (26th September).

The Japanese capital has suffered most from random bombings by various leftwing groups protest Japan's business activities abroad, and more recently the proposed visit of the Emperor to the United States on September 30th.

The first bomb tested -- watched by a helmeted press corps -- was similar in size to the device exploded outside the offices of the Mitsubishi trading company in Tokyo last August, killing eight and injuring 376. The small crude bomb blew a large hole in a concrete block and cracked the block across. The block weighed 3.5tons. Later a car-bomb was exploded.

The police department say they are testing the bombs to find the best way to dispose of them safely. Patterns of blast provide them with information as to the best way to approach the bomb or the best way to escape from the blast.
