Background: Since the death of her husband in July, President Maria Peron has enjoyed a brief respite from the violent turmoil that was threatening to disrupt the political movement of General Juan Peron.

But now as the Montoneros and other left-wing groups take up arms against Senora Peron's Government, political observers believe she faces a period of intense struggle to control the turbulent politics of Argentina.

It was in an atmosphere of growing tension that President Peron visited Argentina's Navy headquarters in the capital Buenos Aires on Thursday (September 5) together with her recently-appointed Defence Minister Adelfo Mario Savino.

President Peron was attending a private lunch given in her honour by naval commanders. It was the Argentine Navy which spearheaded the move which sent General Juan Peron into exile in 1955.

The previous day, a powerful bomb exploded on the outskirts of the capital and troops had to beat off a tear gas attack on an infantry guard post.

On Saturday (September 7), young disenchanted Peronists announced they were going underground to wage an "armed struggle" to fight against a Government they said no longer represented the people.
