  • Description

France's declared readiness to send peace-keeping troops to Lebanon has brought new political conflicts between the country's warring factions.

The right wing Falangist radio spoke of the arrival of French troops as a foregone conclusion once rightist President Suleiman Franjieh hands over to President-elect Elias Sarkis.

French President Giscard D'Estaing said during his American tour last week that the United States and Syria favoured the idea of a French peace-keeping force.

France has special ties with Lebanon which was a French protectorate before World War Two.

The force, if sent, would be of about five thousand men, backed by a formidable array of firepower. A French naval detachment, including the aircraft carrier Clemenceau carrying several squadrons, is due to visit Egypt next week and could be diverted to Lebanon.
