  • Description

Chad's Foreign Minister Lieutenant colonel Wadal Abdelkader Kamougue has said his country is the victim of gross aggression by the Libyan Jamahiriyah.

SYNOPSIS: Colonel Kamougue was addressing the United Nations General Assembly in New York last Friday (7 October). He said the current session of the Assembly came at a crucial time in the history of his country. He stated that since 1973, the Libyan Jamahiriyah had been illegally occupying a large zone of Chad's northern border area known as the Aouzou Strip.

The Chad Foreign Minister told the General Assembly that the Libyan Jamahiriyah was also interfering in its domestic affairs and was trying to replace the legal government of his country with a puppet government that would be at its beck and call. He said the Libyan Jamahiriyah has getting help from Chadian traitors and mercenaries. He accused the Libyan Jamahiriyah of building military air bases in the Aouzou Strip with the assistance of foreign technicians.

Colonel Kamougue said his country believed in peaceful co-existence with its neighbours and called for cooperation between the Libyan Jamahiriyah and Chad to fight the enemies of Africa. He said that such harmony existed not so long ago and should exist again as the peoples of both countries had many common problems.

The Libyan Jamahiriyah has been claiming the Aouzou Strip under a treaty signed during the Second World War between occupied France and Italy which had control over the Libyan territory. France has denied the treaty any legal standing and has sided with Chad by airlifting urgent military supplies to Chadian troops four months ago when violent fighting erupted in the region.
