  • Description

The Shah of Persia officially opened a new army weapon training school - mainly staffed by German teachers - in Teheran August 10. After inspecting a guard-of-honour, the Shah received an extensive report on the school from General Deftari - head of the Army Ammunition Department - and went on to make a tour of the various workshops and classes.

Following President Nasser's announcement July 26 that he had broken off diplomatic relations between the United Arab Republic and Persia, the Persian Foreign Ministry ordered the U.A.R. Ambassador to leave the country within 24 hours. The reason for the rupture between the two nations was Persia's decision to recognise the State of Israel.

President Nasser's statement that the Shah was "a tool on imperialist and Zionist hands" was keenly resented in Persia. Persian Foreign Minister Abbas Aram described President Nasser as a "Feeble-minded Pharaoh" who was "retaining power by exploiting his own nation." Persia would not resume relations with the U.A.R. as long as the present "Illegal" regime was in power, he said.
