Background: In the grounds of Arundel Park, Sussex, home of the Duke and Duchess of Norfolk, seven riders and nine horses are hard at work, training for the show jumping at the Olympic Games, to be held in Rome later this year. From the seven, three riders and a reserve will be chosen to represent Britain.

The team will not be selected until after the Dublin Horse Show, in August, where the Olympic challengers will strive to catch the attention of the judges and win a place in the team.

Olympic team trainer, Colonel Talbot-Ponsonby, puts then through their paces every morning. A specially built show jumping course keeps both riders and horses in perfect condition.

Included in the seven possibles is Pat Smythe, who has jumped for Britain on several Olympic occasions. She is one of the most experienced women show jumpers in the world.

Youngest of the group is 19-year-old Ann Townsend. He recent string of wins give her a strong claim for a place at the Olympics in September. At Rotterdam, last year, she won the European Ladies Championship.

Others with a chance of selection are Wilf White, Mrs Warren Woffard, David Barker, Brigadier Blacker and David Broome.
