  • Description

Soviet Prime Minister Alexei Kosygin arrived in Baghdad on Thursday (April 6) for a visit described by a Baghdad Radio commentator as of paramount importance.

The visit is expected to strengthen ties between the Soviet Union and Iraq, and is seen as demonstrating Soviet support for the Arabs against Israel.

Mr. Kosygin was met by Mr. Saddam Hussein Al-Takriti--deputy chairman of the Revolutionary Command Council, leaders of the ruling Baath Socialist Party, Ministers and foreign diplomats.

The visit coincides with the 25th anniversary of the founding of the Baath party and inauguration of the North Rumaila Oilfield--developed with Russian assistance.
