Background: INTRODUCTION: Nearly 350,000 people packed the Dutch capital Amsterdam on Saturday (21 November) inn one of the largest anti-nuclear demonstrations ever seen in Europe. In West Germany, where Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev arrived on Sunday (22 November) for an official visit, protest against the visit and nuclear warfare were held in Bonn and Dortmund.Mr.Brezhnev is visiting West Germany only a week before talks start in Geneva between the United States and Soviet Union aimed at curbing the nuclear arms race in Europe.

SYNOPSIS: Crowds converged on the centre of Amsterdam to take part in the anti-nuclear rally.Holding placards and mock nuclear weapons, the protesters virtually brought the capital to a halt. The atmosphere was light-hearted in spit of the seriousness of the subject. The rally, organised by International Peace Council pressed for NATO to reverse a 1979 agreement to base medium-range missiles in Europe.Forty-eight of the missiles are destined for the Netherlands.

The streets were free of cars, as the demonstrators filed through the heart of the city.Among the crowd were five hundred soldiers in uniforms.Their participation in the event was against military orders, and they will face disciplinary action.People taking part in the protest applauded the soldiers as they marched past.

Light aircraft flew over the crowds pulling streamers echoing the anti-nuclear sentiments of the demonstrators below.Banners in the crowd called for Soviet and US nuclear weapons out of Europe. After the rally, the Dutch Prime Minister, Andries Van Agt, said everyone would sympathise with the protesters but disarmament had to be a two-way business, involving both East and West.

In West Germany, protests were staged in two centres to coincide with the visit of Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev.West Germany's earlier optimism over talks has been dispelled by Soviet reaction to US proposals that NATO would abandon plans to station missile sin Europe if the Soviet Union did the same.In Bonn and dortmund, anti-nuclear protesters staged demonstrations in spite of the restrictions placed on exiles living in West Germany. The demonstrators came from all over Europe to demand the withdrawal of Soviet troops from Afghanistan, for human rights in the Soviet Union, and for a nuclear-free Europe.Mr.Brezhnev was to have talks with Chancellor Helmut Schmidt during the three-day visit.
