  • Description

Voters in one of the world's wealthiest States - Kuwait - went to the polls on Saturday (January 23) to choose the country's third National Assembly since independence in 1961. No political parties are allowed in the little sheikhdom but candidates for the fifty seats sought support from religious societies, trade unions and social and sports clubs.

The 41,000 people entitled to vote from the population of 540,000 were all male. There were 188 candidates. A special committee supervised the elections and voting was brisk.

The discovery of oil in Kuwait in 1936 has had a dramatic effect on the country. From being a quiet dhow port, dealing in skins, wool and pearl fishing, it has become a thriving modern capital. Today it has a per capita income of about GBP1,420 sterling a year and an estimated income from oil last year of about GBP375 million.
