  • Description

A dispute over the destination of an overseas freighter has resulted in its being anchored off Newcastle Harbour since last Sunday. The freighter, the "Yanxilas", of ten thousand tons, as to have sailed for Communist China with a cargo of about 12-thousand tons of Australian bulk wheat. The ships' agents said today that she was under charter to a Chinese mainland import agency. Soon after leaving the Harbour on Sunday, the "Yanxilas" dropped anchor in the Stockton Bight just north of Newcastle Harbour. Agents believe that the Master received instructions from the Chinese charter company to sail for Havana instead of Shanghai, and that the Master and crew refused to sail for Cuba. A spokesman for the Customs Department in Newcastle said today that no immediate action was expected to be taken. The "Yanxilas' had full clearances and wheat permits for Cuba when it left the port.
