    THE UNITED NATIONS ECONOMIC COMMISSION FOR AFRICA (ECA) ENDED ITS WEEK-LONG CONFERENCE IN LAGOS, NIGERIA, TODAY (SATURDAY), AFTER CONSIDERING VARIOUS ASPECTS OF AFRICANS ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT. SOME 600 DELEGATES FROM 36 AFRICAN STATES ATTENDED WHAT WAS THE 8TH PLENARY MEETING OF THE ECA.

    AMONG YESTERDAY'S SPEAKERS WAS MR. BAHIZI, WHO CLAIMED THAT FISCAL POLICY AND CUSTOMS DUTY BY ONE AFRICAN COUNTRY AGAINST ANOTHER WAS ONE OF THE FACTORS-DIVIDING THE CONTINENT. HE URGED THAT EFFORTS BE MADE BY ALL AFRICAN COUNTRIES TO OPERATE AN "OPEN-DOOR" TRADING POLICY WITH ONE ANOTHER.

    (TODAY, THE DELEGATE REPRESENTING THE INTERNATIONAL CONFEDERATION OF FREE TRADE UNIONS, MR. ALHAJI H.P. ADEBOLA OF NIGERIA, CALLED ON AFRICAN STATES TO POOL THEIR TRANSPORT AND TELECOMMUNICATION RESOURCES. HE ALSO URGED THE REORIENTATION OF EDUCATION TO REMOVE THE LANGUAGE BARRIERS BETWEEN ENGLISH AND FRENCH-SPEAKING AFRICAN STATES.)
