  • Description

The historic French Chateau of Rambouillet near Paris is being prepared as the setting of two days of summit talks between the Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev and President Georges Pompidou.

The Chateau -- parts of which date from the fourteenth century -- has hosted many distinguished guests over the centuries, including Napoleon the First and charles the Tenth, and many foreign visitors.

Mr. Brezhnev will arrive in France on Monday (25 June) after his summit talks with President Nixon. President Pompidou has just completed summit talks with West Germany's chancellor Willy Brandt.

The talks at Chateau Rambouillet will mark the second meeting between the two leaders within six months. Mr. Brezhnev's prompt acceptance of President Pompidou's invitation to talks indicates the priority the Soviet leader is placing on relaxed relations with Europe.

They last conferred near Minak in January when President Pompidou reiterated that France was against balanced troop cuts between NATO and the Warsaw Pact. But the discussions revealed they were in broad agreement on other major European questions such as the evolution of a German solution and the boosting of economic cooperation between France and the Soviet Union.

President Pompidou said later the Minsk talks had given a new dynamism to Franco-Soviet relations, which have been improving steadily since the late general de Gaulle visited Moscow in 1966.
