    Tribesmen this week (Friday) honoured the Sheikh Mohamed Ali Aktaf with religious ceremonies and animal sacrifices. The Sheikh, who died in 1962 aged 97, is venerated among the tribesmen as a saint.

    Tantan is the capital of Tarfaya, Morocco's southernmost province, which was previously held by Spain.

    In his time Sheikh Mohamed Al Aktaf fought hard for Moroccan independence, was a great patriot, and became well known as a "man of God".

    Veneration of his memory has achieved cultist proportions, and regular festival in his honour bring forth a strong body of dedicated followers.

    A highlight of Friday's festival was the sacrifice of two camel to the dead Sheikh's memory. The Governor of Tarfaya province, Mutapha Turik, and the elderly brother of the Sheikh took part in the ceremonies.

    There have been recent reports of petroleum deposits in the province.
