    World heavyweight boxing champion Muhammad Ali said at a United Nations news conference yesterday (5 March) that if the people of the United States gave up eating fora couple of days, they'd be better placed to understand the sufferings of people in the drought and famine stricken regions of Africa.

    During the conference, Ali announced that the promoters of his March 24 title fight against Chuck Wepner would donate 50 cents from every closed-circuit television ticket sold to African drought relief.

    It could bring in as much as half a million dollars. That, said Ali, would be only a grain of sand in the desert--given the size of the problem. But he hoped his action might help make people more aware of the situation:
