Background: A Coach drawn by four horses left Istanbul, Turkey, for Rotterdam, Holland, Mar 30, with a selection of tulip bulbs onboard. The 36-day coach journey is to mark the 400th anniversary of the introduction of tulip bulbs into Western Europe, from Turkey.

From Istanbul the coach will pass through Greece, Yugoslavia, Austria and Germany, before reaching Rotterdam.

Before the coach trip got under way, a ceremony - attended by the Dutch Ambassador and the President of Istanbul Municipality - was held in St. Sophia square. Thousands of people watched the procession of floats followed by Turkish and Dutch girls in national dress. The coach was the centrepiece of the pageant.

Music was provided by the Mehters orchestra - it dates back to the time of the Ottoman Empire when the Mehters were the official Palace musicians.

When the coach started on the first lap of the trip, it paused for a few moments at Yesilkoy Airport outside the city. On the tarmac was a Caravel jet airliner. It was a sharp reminder of the progress that has been made in travel, since the time the first tulip bulb found its way to Holland.
