Background: An anonymous buyer has paid 'GBP'55,000 sterling(83,000 U.S. dollars) for the personal log book kept by Captain William Bligh, of 'mutiny on the Bounty' fame nearly 200 years ago.

SYNOPSIS: The log was sold at Christie's auction rooms in London, England, on Wednesday (24 November). Bidding began at ten thousand pounds (over 16,000 U.S. dollars).

Captain Bligh began his log when he was set adrift in a small boat in 1759 after a mutiny on his ship, the Bounty. The leather-bound pocket book has 107 pages of closely written notes including a description of mutineer leader Fletcher Christian. It tells of his epic 3,500-mile (5,600 kilometres) voyage through the Pacific Ocean. He was cast adrift at Tifua, in Mid-pacific, and ended up in the south seas at Timor, near Indonesia.

Bidding for the log was eventually going up by five thousand pounds at a time (8,000 U.S. dollars).

Both the seller and the buyer -- who bid through an agent -- chose to remain anonymous. The log was recently discovered by historians in the possession of a descendant of Captain Bligh.
