  • Description

OBSERVERS IN ISTANBUL HAVE NOTED AN INCREASE OF TRAFFIC RECENTLY OF SOVIET WARSHIPS THROUGH THE TURKISH STRAITS BETWEEN THE BLACK SEA AND THE MEDITERRANEAN.

YESTERDAY (SUNDAY) SEVERAL RUSSIAN VESSELS SAILED FROM THE BOSPHORUS BACK INTO THE BLACK SEA. TODAY A SOVIET HELICOPTER-CARRYING CRUISER WAS SIGHTED IN THE STRAITS HEADING IN THE OTHER DIRECTION, BACK TOWARDS THE MEDITERRANEAN.

THE PASSAGE OF THE CRUISER TODAY WAS THE FIRST MOVEMENT OF SOVIET NAVAL UNITS GOING IN A SOUTHERLY DIRECTION THROUGH THE STRAITS FOR OVER A MONTH. BUT THERE HAS BEEN CONSIDERABLE RUSSIAN NAVAL TRAFFIC IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION SINCE MID-AUGUST.

ACCORDING TO THE ISTANBUL PORT AUTHORITY, SINCE THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR, 92 SHIPS HAVE GONE THROUGH THE STRAITS INTO THE MEDITERRANEAN WITH 59 RETURNING TO THE BLACK SEA.
