  • Description

LIBERIA HAS JUST CELEBRATED 120 YEARS OF INDEPENDENCE. THE ANNIVERSARY DAY LAST WEDNESDAY (26 JULY) WAS MARKED BY A BIG PARADE IN THE CAPITAL, MONROVIA, AND AN ADDRESS BY PRESIDENT TUBMAN.

THE DAY STARTED EARLY WITH BIG CROWDS TURNING OUT TO JOIN IN THE CELEBRATIONS. THEY HAD ALREADY CROWDED INTO THE CITY'S BARCLAY TRAINING CENTRE WHEN PRESIDENT TUBMAN ARRIVED BY CAR FOR THE OFFICIAL CEREMONIES.

THE PRESIDENT WAS MET BY THE SECRETARY OF DEFENCE MR ROBERT BREWER AND THE ARMY CHIEF OF STAFF, MAJOR-GENERAL GEORGE WASHINGTON. THEY STOOD TO ATTENTION BEFORE THEIR FLAG AS THE NATIONAL ANTHEM WAS PLAYED AND A 21-GUN SALUTE FIRED.

BEFORE PRESIDENT TUBMAN WENT ON TO INSPECT A GUARD OF HONOUR, HE HEARD THE UNDER-SECRETARY OF STATE FOR ADMINISTRATION, MR ERNEST EASTMEN, SAY IN A SPEECH THAT THE DESTINY OF LIBERIAN DEMOCRACY RESTED IN THE MINDS OF THE CITIZENS.

THEN THE PRESIDENT INSPECTED THE GUARD MOUNTED BY ENLISTED OFFICERS OF THE LIBERIAN NATIONAL GUARD, THE COAST GUARD AND THE POLICE FORCE. BEFORE THE MILITARY MARCH-PAST, PRESIDENT TUBMAN AND THE CROWD SAW DEMONSTRATIONS BY YOUTH ORGANISATIONS AND STUDENT BODIES.

IN HIS SPEECH TO THE NATION, PRESIDENT TUBMAN REAFFIRMED HIS BELIEF IN DEMOCRACY. HE SAID THAT FOR 120 YEARS LIBERIA'S SYSTEM OF GOVERNMENT HAD WITHSTOOD THE TESTS OF TIME. BUT HE ALSO SOUNDED A WARNING NOTE, REMINDING THE NATION OF WHAT HE CALLED THE ALMOST INSURMOUNTABLE SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC ISSUES FACING IT. HE URGED LIBERIANS TO STRIVE UNRELENTINGLY TO SECURE THEIR ECONOMIC, SOCIAL, POLITICAL AND RELIGIOUS LIBERTIES.
