TRANSCRIPT: VON DARDEL: "Well, we have come here to Israel in order to gather support to...(INDISTINCT)...and to set free our brother Raoul Wallenberg who, after his big action in Budapest to save a large, very large number of Jews, disappeared in the Soviet prisons and has been kept there, according to our information, for 34 years. We are convinced that he is still alive from very recent witnesses and what we really need is to have the help of public opinion and of the government to try to get him free."

Background: As President Carter of the United States and Soviet Head of State Leonid Brezhnev continued their SALT summit in Vienna at the weekend (15 - 17 June), a Swedish family tried to inject another issue into the discussions. The family want President Carter to ask: 'what is the true fate of Raoul Wallenberg?'. The Swedish diplomat was based in Budapest during the Second World War and is credited with saving some 15,000 jews from Nazi internment by giving them Swedish documents. But he was arrested by the Russians as a spy at the end of the war. The Kremlin has repeatedly told Sweden that Wallenberg died of heart failure in a Moscow prison in 1947. But there have been persistent reports that he is still alive in a Soviet jail. Wallenberg's half-brother, Guy von Dardel -- a professor of Physics who works in Geneva - arrived in Vienna on Saturday (16 June) to draw American and Soviet attention to the case.

SYNOPSIS: Mr. von Dardel had earlier taken the issue to the Israeli Knesset in Jerusalem, to seek the support of Prime Minister Menachem Begin. The Israeli Premier listened sympathetically as the professor, and Wallenberg's sister Mrs Nina Lagergren, explained the case. It was later reported Mr. Begin had ordered his ambassador in Washington to ask President Carter to raise the matter at the SALT summit.

Raoul Wallenberg's story begins 35 years ago in Budapest with his arrest. Ten years later came the Soviet disclosure of his death. But now there are reports he is still alive.
