    Background: Sudan's President, Major General Jaafar Mohammed el Nimery, visited Britain's famous royal military academy at Sandhurst on Monday (26 March).

    President Nimery flew from Khartoum, Sudan's capital, on Sunday (25 March) for a six-day visit, which will include talks with the British Government on Middle Eastern developments and Anglo-Sudanese commercial and cultural relations.

    His visit to Britain, the first by a Sudanese head of state since 1964, comes amid improving relations between Sudan and the United Kingdom. He is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Edward Health of Tuesday (27 March) after being Queen Elizabeth's luncheon guest.

    Stringent security precautions were in force during the President's visit to Sandhurst. He was briefed on the work of the military college, which has a long tradition of training British and Commonwealth officers.

    British officials said that the President's talks may also cover possible co-operation in training between the British and Sudanese armies.
