  • Description

FRANCE TODAY (WEDNESDAY) LAUNCHED HER SECOND DIADEM SATELLITE FROM HER HAMMAGUIR DESERT BASE IN THE SAHARA. IT WAS THE FIFTH SATELLITE THAT FRANCE HAS LAUNCHED.

THE SATELLITE, DIADEM TWO , FOLLOWED THE IDENTICAL DIADEM ONE WHICH FAILED TO GO INTO HIGH ENOUGH ORBIT FOR THE PLANNED EXPERIMENTS WHEN IT WAS LAUNCHED FROM HAMMAGUIR LAST WEEK.

THE OBJECT OF THE EXPERIMENT IS TO MAP THE EARTH'S SURFACE BY USING LASER BEAMS. REFLECTORS ON THE SATELLITE ARE DESIGNED TO REFLECT THE LASER BEAMS FROM GROUND STATIONS IN FRANCE, ALGERIAN AND GREECE.

IT IS THE FIRST TIME LASER HAVE BEEN USED FOR THIS PURPOSE. SCIENTISTS HOPE THAT THE PROJECT WILL PRODUCE THE MOST ACCURATE MEASUREMENT OF DISTANCES ON THE EARTH'S SURFACE.

TONIGHT THE SATELLITE, OFFICIALLY NAMED "D.I.D.". IS IN ORBIT AROUND THE EARTH WITH A HIGH POINT OF 1,886 MILLIMETRES. SCIENTISTS DELIBERATELY AIMED THE SATELLITE HIGHER THAN NECESSARY TO OVERCOME COMBUSTION IN THE THIRD STAGE OF THE LAUNCHER ROCKET WHICH, THEY BELIEVE, WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE FAILURE OF DIADEM ONE.
