  • Description

A RUSSIAN AND AN HUNGARIAN TENNIS PLAYER TODAY THURSDAY) BROUGHT POLITICS ONTO THE COURTS AT WIMBLEDON, WHEN THEY WITHDREW FROM TWO MATCHES AS A PROTEST AGAINST SOUTH AFRICA'S APARTHEID POLICIES.

ALEX METREVELI, THE RUSSIAN NO. 2, SCRATCHED FROM HIS MEN'S SINGLES THIRD ROUND MATCH AGAINST ABE SEGAL, THE SOUTH AFRICAN CHAMPION. SOON AFTERWARDS ISTVAN GULYAS, OF HUNGARY, WHO WAS PAIRED WITH SEGAL IN THE DOUBLES, ANNOUNCED HIS WITHDRAWAL.

METREVELI SAID AFTER HE MADE HIS DECISION KNOWN THAT IT WAS "COMPLETELY AS A MORAL PROTEST," AND ADDED: "I HAVE ABSOLUTELY NOTHING AGAINST SEGAL. HE IS A FINE PLAYER AND I WOULD HAVE ENJOYED OUR GAME, BUT I KNEW FROM THE START THAT I WOULD HAVE HAD TO SCRATCH IF I CAME UP AGAINST SEGAL OR ANY OTHER SOUTH AFRICAN PLAYER."
SEGAL'S ONLY COMMENT TO PRESSMEN: "IF THESE PEOPLE WANT TO PLAY POLITICS, THEY SHOULD GIVE UP LAWN TENNIS."
LATER MR. DAVID, CHAIRMAN OF THE ALL-ENGLAND CLUB, ORGANISERS OF THE TOURNAMENT, WAS ASKED FOR HIS COMMENTS.
