  • Description

Israeli resentment against the visit of Palestinian leader, yasser Arafat, to Austria intensified on Tuesday (10 July). Prime Minister Menachem begin described the Palestine national covenant as a 'second edition of Hitler's Mein Kampf', while the Israeli Parliament has condemned Austrian Chancellor Bruno Kreisky for receiving Mr Arafat as an official guest.

SYNOPSIS: On his arrival in Vienna, Mr Arafat--head of the Palestinian Liberation Organisation--said the Camp David agreements between Israel and Egypt had destroyed the Geneva Middle East peace conference.

His hosts in Austria were Dr. Kreisky and the former West German leader, Willy Brandt-President of Socialist International. The Austrian Chancellor said he wanted to brief Mr Arafat on the standpoint of Socialist International on the Middle East situation. The tow men have also drawn up their own formula, calling for Israel's withdrawal to 'secure boundaries'. But Mr Arafat's three-day visit immediately caused a serious diplomatic row between Israel and Austria.

At the Knesset in Jerusalem, it was announced that Israel had withdrawn for consultations its Ambassador to Austria. Monday (9 July), the Israeli Parliament condemned the meeting, following a decision by the Cabinet to back Mr Begin's actions over the visit. The Cabinet vote was announced to reporters by spokesman Arieh Naor.
