  • Description

At the United Nations, the General Assembly discussed the possibility of imposing economic sanctions on South Africa in a debate on Thursday (7 December). South Africa was criticised by a number of U.N. representatives for its decision to go-ahead with elections in Namibia -- a territory which the South African Government administers under a former League of Nations mandate. The Security Council -- which has its own plan to supervise Namibian elections next year -- has already declared the recent polling as null and void. One of the speakers in Thursday's debate was Theo-Ben Gurirab, the representative of the South West Africa Peoples Organisation (SWAPO), which contested the Namibian elections.

SYNOPSIS: Another speaker condemning South Africa was the Sudanese Ambassador, Ali-Ahmed Sahoul.
