The Queen and President Eisenhower opened, June 26, the St.Lawrence Seaway. The President - accompanied by Mrs. Eisenhower - arrived for the opening in his personal aircraft "Columbine". Their arrival on Canadian soil - as they were welcomed by the Queen, the Duke and Mr.Diefenbaker, Canadian prime Minister, - was greeted with enthusiastic cheering.
At the ceremony, held at the St.Lambert Lock, the Queen described the Seaway as one of the Outstanding engineering accomplishments of modern times. The President said it formed a lasting monument to the co-operation of democratic countries working peacefully together. With the opening of the Seaway the Great Lakes in the heart of North America and now accessible to large merchant ships sailing to and from the oceans of the world.
Film of the President's arrival for the opening was transmitted to the B.B.C. in London by means of the transatlantic telephone cable. The new device for this form of transmission came into use for the first time when the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh arrived in Canada for their tour on June 18 and was used again on June 23 when the Royal visitors arrived in Quebeck.
