THE LITTLE AMERICA'S TROPHY, HELD BY BRITAIN SINCE 1961, IS AWARDED TO THE FIRST BOAT TO WIN FOUR RACES.

    LADY HELMSMAN, DEFENDING FOR THE THIRD SUCCESSIVE YEAR, COVERED THE THAMES ESTUARY OLYMPIC COURSE IN TWO HOURS 38 MINUTES ONE SECOND. REG WHITE, THE BRITISH HELM, WAS FIRST ACROSS THE STARTING LINE WITH THE CHALLENGER TRAILING BY FIVE SECONDS.

    YANKEE FLYER WAS TWO MINUTES BEHIND AT THE FIRST BUOY BUT PICKED UP 50 SECONDS AT THE END OF THE FIRST ROUND. HOWEVER, YANKEE FLYER REACTED SLUGGISHLY WHEN CONDITIONS FRESHENED AT THE HALFWAY MARK AND LADY HELMSMAN BUILT UP HER LEAD DURING THE CLOSING STAGES.
