Background: Dahomean President, Mathieu Kerekou, recently made a five-day visit to Guinea at the invitation of President Ahmed Sekou Toure. He was accompanied by about 60 Dahomean officials, including the Ministers of Justice, Foreign Affairs and Agriculture.

At the official welcome, President Sekou Toure condemned 'as servile' the first African trade and monetary conference which was then in progress in Abidjan, Ivory Coast. Guinea was one of only two African nations which did not send a delegation to the conference on Africa's future economic and trade links with the European Common Market. President Kerekou had said on Conakry radio just before his visit that the existing economic links with Europe -- known as the Yaounde Convention -- were very unsatisfactory.

On his return President Kerekou said that one of the main reasons for his visit was that President Sekou Toure was the first person to declare unconditional support for the new government he set up in Dahomey last October.
