Moscow took the wraps off its new luxury car at he Autoprom '77 (automobile industry) exhibition on Tuesday (9 August).

SYNOPSIS: At the Gorky car plant, they're expecting the new model will go into mass production later this year. But it's unlikely that the average workers will be able to afford the Gaz-14 Chaika. It's in the luxury limousine class. The car, said by its makers to be dynamic, looks like it' will be favoured by high ranking officials. Claims for its performance say a speed of 100 kilometres an hour (63 miles and hour) can be reached in 15 seconds. Top speed is a claimed 175 kilometres an hour (110 miles an hour). The Soviet-made car's performance approaches that of its Western counterparts.

Inside, seven people, including the driver, can travel in air-conditioned comfort. And there's stereo radio and cassette deck for that added touch of style. The chunky bodywork houses a powerful 220 horsepower V-8 engine which like most luxury cars, is not very economical. But as in the West, it's thought by the designers that the sort of people who'll be able to afford the car will not complain about the petrol consumption.
