Background: Perched high on a mountain, the Church of Our Lady of Penha is one of Rio de Janeiro's most famous churches. In October, which is dedicated to Our Lady of Penha, a well known religious custom, called Promessa, takes place on the 365 steps leading up to the church.
People wishing to obtain a special grace - such as recovering from sickness-climb the 365 steps on their knees or hopping on one foot, and afterwards make a promise to Our Lady.
The custom takes its name from the last part of the ceremony, and during October, thousands of people flock to visit the church.
