  • Description

Two gunmen fired bazooka shells at an Israeli El Al airliner at Orly Airport in Paris on Monday (13 January), but missed their target and hit a Yugoslav airliner instead.

The Yugoslav airliner was nearly empt: a Yugoslav steward and a French policeman were injured in the attack, which took place as the packed El Al airliner was taxiing for take-off on a flight to New York and Montreal.

The unidentified gunmen fired from a terrace about 250 yards (metres) from the aircraft. They fired several shells - one hit the Yugoslav aircraft but failed to explode, and another damaged an airport maintenance building.

The men escaped in a car after the minute-long attack. The vehicle was later found abandoned in a Paris suburb. The only clue the men left was a Russian-made piston which one of them apparently dropped during the getaway.

An anonymous telephone caller later told Reuters news agency that the attack was carried out by an Arab guerrilla group called the Mohammed Boudia Commando, named after a pro-Palestinian Algerian exile killed by a car bomb in Paris in 1973.
