  • Description

From four rallying points in the suburbs of Calo, columns of people converged on the capital Mar 19 to demonstrate against the possibility of manufacturing or installing nuclear weapons in Norway. Carrying banners of protest, and tired little children, they marched to the City Hall Square.

Asked why the demonstrations and protest marches had been organised when there were no atomic weapons on Norwegian soil, and no known plans to introduce them into the country, a member of the organising committee said they found it necessary to make known their feelings on the subject before such plans were considered. it was stressed that the demonstrations were directed against nuclear weapons in Norway, and not against Norway's participation in N.A.T.O.

Similar anti-nuclear weapon demonstrations were being held simultaneously all over the country. From the Polar Circle to Kristiansand, fires were lit on mountain tops to demonstrate the strength of public feeling on the subject. This was an ancient method of warning that invaders had landed.
