  • Description

Canadian Prime Minister, Pierre Trudeau, started an 11-day tour of three latin American countries, in which he hopes to enhance Canada's image, with a visit to mexico on friday, 23 January.

After three days in Mexico, for talks with Mexican President, Luis Echeverria, he files to Havana for three days in Cuba, then goes to Caracas, Venezuela.

His visit to Cuba has special significance. He will be the first head of government of a NATO country to visit the Communist country.

In Venezuela, which supplies Canada with most of its imported oil, Mr. Trudeau's talks with President Carlos Perez are expected to concern a proposed relationship between the recently nationalised Venezuelan petroleum industry and the new Canadian Government-owned petroleum corporation.

Mr. Trudeau said his visit to the three countries was aimed at enhancing the image of Canada where it has been "screened from their view by the colossus of the United States."
Soon after landing in Mexico City, Mr. Trudeau attended the firs of a series of meetings over the weekend with Senor Echeverria at the Presidential Palace.

The two leaders discussed possible exchanges of nuclear and petroleum technology. Canada and Mexico both share the same concerns about their mutual neighbour, the United States.
