  • Description

Southwest of Phnom Penh on Wednesday (6 June), refugees from towns in the path of a recent communist attack headed back along Route Four towards Phnom Penh, the capital of the Khmer Republic.

Officials in the area said communist troops had attacked several small towns and villages during the night and had set fire to the houses. No reports of civilian casualties were mentioned.

The refugees will be swelling already overcrowded camps around the capital. But with more ships running the gauntlet of communist ambushes along the Mekong River during the last week, critical shortages of fuel and ammunition have been slightly eased. Nevertheless, officials are still expressing concern over rice shortages and there is talk of continuing airlifts in an effort to relieve the situation.
