  • Description

Queen Elizabeth and her husband, prince Philip, laid a wreath of poppies on the tomb of France's Unknown Soldier in Paris on Tuesday (May 16) in a brief and simple ceremony watched by thousands of office workers.

The ceremony took place beneath the Arc de Triomphe during the second day of the British monarch's five-day state visit -- aimed at cementing Anglo-French relations prior to Britain's entry into the Common Market.

The visit is the Queen's second to France in fifteen years -- breaking a centuries-old tradition which says that a British monarch never visits the same country twice.

After the wreath-laying ceremony, Queen Elizabeth and the French Prime Minister, Jacques Chaban-Delmas, drove in an open car down the Champs Elysses Avenue escorted by 40 police outriders -- as the owners of private cars parked along the roadside hooted their horns in welcome.

SYNOPSIS: During the second day of her state visit to France, Queen Elizabeth and her husband, Prince Philip, drove to the Arc de triomphe to lay a wreath on the tomb of France's Unknown Soldier.

It was a brief and simple ceremony....
Laying the wreath of poppies on the tomb was just one of many ???ngagements in the Queen's agenda. The visit is her second to France in fifteen years....And it breaks a tradition that's lasted for centuries -- that British monarchs never make more than one visit to the same country. This time, she's crossed the channel to cement Anglo-French relations prior to Britain's entry into the Common Market. After the wreath-laying ceremony, the Royal couple were asked to sign a Book of Honour.

As with her arrival in paris on Monday, the weather was cold and rainy. But even so, thousands of workers turned out to watch the ceremony.
