  • Description

Three American astronauts went through another mission briefing Wednesday (October 9) as the countdown continued for the launch of the Apollo-7 spacecraft into an earth orbit.

The astronauts, Navy Captain Walter M. Schirra Junior, Air Force Major Donn. F. Eisele (Eyes-lee) and civilian astronaut Walter Cunningham, discussed with Major General Samuel C. Phillips, director of the Apollo program, and Paul Donnelly, National Aeronaut and Space Agency Apollo Test Conductor, their mission in Space. The Apollo 7 is expected to orbit the earth for nearly eleven days with the three astronauts aboard as a prelude to a lunar orbiting flight in late December. While the astronauts met with their superiors, technicians at the launch base at Cape Kennedy, Florida were making the final adjustments in the astronauts' space suits. They also continued making last minute checks on other equipment. On Wednesday also, the fleet of long-range airplanes that will track the space capsule on its re-entry into the atmosphere and its splashdown were deployed from Cape Kennedy. The pilots of the craft were given their final orders before the takeoff to fields near their station.
