    COMPETITORS FROM 23 COUNTRIES YESTERDAY (TUESDAY) BEGAN THE SHOOT-OFF IN THE 23RD WORLD ARCHERY CHAMPIONSHIPS BEING HELD AT VASTERAS, IN CENTRAL SWEDEN. IN ALL 173 COMPETITORS HAVE ENTERED FOR BOTH THE MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TITLES.

    TWO EVENTS IN EACH OF THE CHAMPIONSHIPS WERE HELD YESTERDAY, AND IN THE MEN'S TITLE, MATTI HAIKONEN, OF FINLAND, HELD THE LEAD AFTER THE 90 AND 70 METRES EVENTS. FINLAND ALSO LED IN THE MEN'S TEAM PLACING AHEAD OF THE UNITED STATES AND SWEDEN.

    IN THE WOMEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP, GRACE FRYE AMBORSKI, LED IN THE WOMEN'S INDIVIDUAL CLASSIFICATION AFTER THE 60 AND 70 METRE EVENTS. IN THE TEAM TABLE, AMERICA LED SWEDEN AND FINLAND.

    AMONG THE COMPETITORS ARE TWO MEMBERS OF THE OLD JAVANESE ROYAL HOUSE, PRINCESS WIDANARI AND HER FATHER PRINCE PAKU ALAM THE EIGHTH. THEIR RESULTS AFTER THE FIRST DAY WERE NOT TOO GOOD, LIKE THOSE OF THE FORMER WORLD CHAMPION, JOE THORNTON, OF THE UNITED STATES, WHO CLAIMS DESCENT FROM THE CHEROKEE INDIANS.
