MILIMO PUNABANTU, AND THE MINISTER FOR THE WESTERN PROVINCE, MR. ANDREW MTEMBA, MR. ZULU URGED ZAMBIA'S TWO COPPER COMPANIES TO INTENSIFY EXPLORATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF MINERALS, HE SAID HE WAS NOT SATISFIED WITH THEIR EXPANSION PLANS FOR THE NEXT FIVE YEARS AND SAID THAT ZAMBIA WOULD HAVE TO INCREASE PRODUCTION TO FIND WIDER WORLD MARKETS. THE NEW GBP2,300,000 PLANT, WHEN COMPLETED, WILL BE CAPABLE OF AN OUTPUT OF 500,000 TONS OF ORE A MONTH. THE PLANT'S CRUSHING MACHINE IS THE LARGEST IN ZAMBIA AND ONE OF THE BIGGEST IN AFRICA.

TWO NEW FACTORIES - ONE FOR MAKING FURNITURE AND THE OTHER WATCHES -- ARE RAPIDLY EXPANDING. THE FURNITURE FACTORY, WHICH STARTED IN JANUARY THIS YEAR, HAS MORE THAN 100 EMPLOYEES, ALL ZAMBIANS. ITS OWNER PLANS TO DOUBLE THE NUMBER OF STAFF ONCE FULL PRODUCTION IS REACHED. A WATCH FACTORY, STARTED AT THE SAME TIME, HAS A STAFF OF SEVEN AND MAKES MEN'S WATCHES. AT PRESENT, THE COMPONENTS COME FROM FRANCE AND SWITZERLAND BUT IT IS HOPED THAT THE PARTS WILL SOON BY LOCALLY MADE. TWO OF THE STAFF ARE BEING SENT TO SWITZERLAND BY THE OWNER FOR SIX MONTH'S TRAINING.
