Background: Thousands of bereaved Americans paying their respects to Senator Robert Kennedy filed past his casket at New York City's St. Patrick's Cathedral on Friday (June 6). An honor guard of Kennedy friends and family, in changing teams of four, maintained a constant vigil by the bier.

As dawn broke over the city, a longline of mourners were already waiting for the doors of St. Patrick's to open. Hundreds had waited all night. Passing the casket at the rate of 500 an hour, mourners wept, crossed themselves, and some bent to kiss the bier.

Senator edward Kennedy, the only survivor of the four Kennedy brothers, sat alone during a 6 A.M. mass, one of several held during the day.

Robert Kennedy Jr., aged 14, joined an honor guard at his late father's casket about 8 A.M. He stood clenching his fists. Several times he ran his fingers over the top of the coffin.

All over New York City flags were at half staff and crepe-draped photographs of Senator Kennedy appeared.

Senator Kennedy's body was scheduled to be transported by train from New York to Washington on Saturday. There the Senator will be buried in Arlington Memorial Cemetery.
