  • Description

The first Russian tanker to arrives in Havana since Cuba seized the Texaco, Shell and Esso refineries for refusing to process crude Russian oil, arrived July 7 in Havana Harbour.

The tanker approached the Morro Castle entrance to the Havana Dock area, then proceeded to the Regla area of the docks; in the background: the Esso and Shell refineries.

The Standard Oil Co of New Jersey, a world-wide oganisation, issued a statement July 8 warning anyone contemplating the use of tankers for carriage of Russian crude oil that Standard Oil would 'remember' this fact when placing long-term contracts.

Observers said this was presumably aimed at preventing Cuba being supplied by Black-Sea-oil-carrying tankers from Europe.

This first crude-oil shipment followed by others helped the Castro Regime to stave off a fuel shortage until the seized refineries could be operated fully again by Cuban technicians. Cuba's power system depends on oil-fired generators.
