  • Description

ISRAEL HAS CALLED FOR AN URGENT MEETING OF THE UNITED NATIONS SECURITY COUNCIL TO COMPLAIN ABOUT A RECENT INCIDENT ON THE SUEZ CANAL. THE ISRAELIS SAY THAT EGYPTIAN FORCES CROSSED THE CANAL AND AMBUSHED TWO ISRAELI VEHICLES ON THE EASTERN SIDE, KILLING TWO ISRAELI SOLDIERS AND CAPTURING A THIRD.

THE COUNCIL OF THE ARAB LEAGUE HAVE ALSO BEEN DISCUSSING THE SITUATION ON THE VARIOUS CEASE-FIRE LINES BETWEEN ISRAEL AND HER ARAB NEIGHBOURS, AND WAYS OF PREVENTING ATTACKS AGAINST ARAB TERRITORY FROM THE ISRAELI SIDE.

THE CANAL, THE CEASE-FIRE LINE BETWEEN ISRAELI AND EGYPTIAN FORCES, HAS BEEN THE SCENE MAINLY OF ARTILLERY DUELS, WHILE RAIDS BY IRREGULARS AND GROUND TROOPS HAVE BEEN MORE FREQUENT ON THE BOUNDARIES BETWEEN ISRAEL AND JORDAN. THIS FILM SHOWS THE SITUATION ON THE CANAL, AS SEEN FROM THE WESTERN BANK.

THE UNITED NATIONS HAVE ABOUT 90 OBSERVERS, DRAWN FROM ARGENTINA, AUSTRIA, CHILE, FINLAND, FRANCE, IRELAND AND SWEDEN, MANNING 18 OBSERVATION POSTS ON EACH SIDE OF THE CANAL. FILM INCLUDES A SHORT CONVERSATION BY TWO OF THESE MEN -- ONE FINNISH AND ONE IRISH -- AS THEY WATCH TWO ARMOURED VEHICLES MOVING ALONG A TRACK ON THE ISRAELI SIDE.

IT THEN SHOWS SOME OF THE DAMAGE IN THE CITY OF SUEZ, WHICH WAS SHELLED IN THE LATEST ARTILLERY EXCHANGE EARLY IN JULY. 43 PEOPLE WERE KILLED THERE AND ABOUT 70 INJURED. THE POPULATION OF SUEZ HAD ALREADY BEEN REDUCED, BY EVACUATION, FROM ITS NORMAL QUARTER OF A MILLION TO ABOUT A HUNDRED THOUSAND. AFTER THE SHELLING, THE CITY GOVERNOR PROPOSED TO MOVE OUT ALL BUT ESSENTIAL WORKERS AT THE OIL REFINERIES.

FURTHER NORTH, THE CITY OF ISMAILIA IS ALSO ONLY A GHOST OF ITS FORMER SELF. NORMALLY, ABOUT 100,000 PEOPLE LIVE THERE; NOW THERE ARE ONLY ABOUT 15,000. ONLY THREE FACTORIES ARE FUNCTIONING, SO THERE IS LITTLE WORK FOR THOSE THAT REMAIN. TRADE IS ALMOST AT A STANDSTILL.

FINALLY, FILM SHOWS THE GREAT BITTER LAKE, BETWEEN THE TWO CITIES -- WHERE FIFTEEN FOREIGN SHIPS HAVE BEEN STRANDED EVER SINCE THE EXIIS, BOTH TO THE NORTH AND SOUTH, WERE BLOCKED IN THE SIX DAY WAR 15 MONTHS AGO. MOVES HAVE BEEN MADE, UNDER UNITED NATIONS AUSPICES, TO CLEAR THE BLOCKAGES AND RELEASE THESE SHIPS, BUT THEY HAVE NOT COME TO ANYTHING. THE ATTEMPT LAST JANUARY ENDED IN A VIOLENT GUN BATTLE BETWEEN EGYPTIANS AND ISRAELIS.
