Background: A public holiday and processions by thousands of people in Damascus highlighted Syria's celebrations to mark the anniversary of the start of last year's October War with Israel on Sunday (6 October).
Syrian President Hafez Al-Assad placed a wreath of flowers on one of the graves in the 'Martyrs' Cemetery' in Damascus while traffic came to a standstill for five minutes in various parts of the country in tribute to those killed in last year's 18-day conflict with Israel.
The state-run Damascus Radio relayed a speech by President Assad which he had delivered on the outbreak of war last October.
The marches in Damascus and other Syrian cities gave a clear indication of the current popular mood of the nation. Everywhere placards were carried proclaiming Arab determination to "Liberate al??? Arab soil from Israeli occupation and ensure the national rights of the Palestinian Arab people."
