  • Description

The Duke of Edinburgh visited Lahore, Peshawar and the Khyber Pass, 12-13-14 Feb.

At Lahore Fortress Stadium he was the President's guest at the National Horse and Cattle Show. Together, the Duke and President Ayub Khan were driven to the show ring in a horse-drawn carriage escorted by Mounted Presidential Troops.

The excited crowds became unmanageable at one point, civil and military police struggling to hold them back. Two horses bolted with fright and there was near-panic. Several People were injured.

60,000 were at the show as pipe bands paraded, members of the mounted escort gave a demonstration of precision riding and tent pegging, and camels danced and fought.

The Duke was presented with a thoroughbred horse, Sultana - descendant of the Derby winner Blue Peter-for the Queen, and two pedigree polo ponies for himself.

The following day the Duke flew to Peshawar after a brief visit to the Pakistani Army depot at Rawalpindi. At Peshawar he spoke to Britons working on the Warsak Dam project.

From Peshawar he motored to Jamrud, a village outpost and fort at the eastern end of the Khyber Pass. The mud-brick fort, now manned by 7th Bn. Frontier Force Regt., commands the eastern approach to the Pass.

Here the Duke met Malik tribesmen, men who fought against Britain in the 1897 uprising. The Duke received three gifts, a sheep, Pathan dagger and a shining replica of the former British Army Lee-Enfield rifle, manufactured in the tribesmen's own arms' factory and copied from a captured British weapon.

On his way back from the Pakistan-Afghanistan border to Peshawar the Duke of Edinburgh stopped at Landi Kital for lunch with the Khyber Rifle Regiment.

After a stay as guest of the Wali of Swat, ruler of a tribal State, the Duke will fly from Peshawar to Rangoon, 18 Feb, after two weeks in Pakistan.
