  • Description

Portuguese Socialist Party Mario Soares held talks with West German leaders in Bonn on Wednesday (17 December) as part of his week-long European mission aimed at winning support for his government.

In the West German capital, Dr. Soares met Chancellor Helmut Schmidt and Social-Democrat leader Willy Brandt. After the talks Herr Schmidt said West Germany was considering a loan to Portugal, possibly along the lines of the 5,000 million marks (800 million pounds sterling) credit given to Italy last year.

The Chancellor said the economic situation in Portugal was very serious.

"Naturally the European community is prepared to help and the Federal Republic (West Germany) is especially ready to help," he said.

Dr. Soares has already visited Heads of the Italian and French Socialist parties and one of the EEC Vice-Presidents, Henri Simonet.

The Socialist Party, which forms the main prop of Portugal's coalition government, feels its survival in the months ahead will mostly depend on its ability to lead the country through the present economic crisis.

With the defeat of the military left in last month's abortive uprising, they hope the right political conditions for a massive injection of European Economic aid have now been created.
