  • Description

The Peronist campaign for the second round of Argentina's national elections on Sunday (15 April) ended with a massive rally addressed by President-elect Hector Campora at a Buenos Aires football stadium on Thursday (12 April).

Senor Campora was backed by ex-President Juan Peron in the first round of the elections, in which their Justicialist Party won 49.56 per cent of the votes. The second round of voting was to decide governorships and Senate and Chamber of Deputies seats, where there was no clear victory in the first round.

Thursday's rally was in support of Peronist candidate Marcelo Sanchez Sorondo, who is contesting the third senate seat with Radical candidate Fernando de la Rua. Senor Sorondo, who did not speak at the rally, is also seeking the post of Foreign Minister in the Campora Government.

Dr. Campora told the 40,000 crowd at the Velez Sarsfield football stadium that he expected them to ratify their faith in his leadership in Sunday's election. Dr. Campora will take over as President on May 25.
